Breast reduction, also known as reduction
mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reduce the size
and weight of the breasts. Many women with large breasts
complain of upper back pain, neck pain, shoulder discomfort,
and bra strap grooving due to the weight of the breasts
in the bra. Breast reduction can offer physical relief
as well as cosmetic improvement and at the same time dramatically
improve your appearance and self-esteem. Many women who
have had a breast reduction find themselves more physically
and socially active.
Good candidates for breast reduction are
patients with heavy breasts which cause symptoms related
to the weight of the breast, patients who are in good
health and not excessively overweight, non-smokers and
teenagers with disproportionate breasts who as a result
may be suffering from low self-esteem.
Some insurance companies will pay for a
portion of the cost of breast reduction; however there
are strict criteria that must be met. The criteria takes
into consideration the patients height and weight and
the estimated amount of breast tissue that will be removed.
