Cosmetic laser resurfacing, also called
a laser peel, is a procedure that smoothes the facial
skin by using a laser to remove damaged areas improve
some scars and shrink fine wrinkles. It can also correct
areas of uneven pigmentation resulting in a smoother tighter
and fresher complexion.
During the procedure, the surgeon passes
the activated laser back and forth over the skin until
reaching the safest depth of treatment that will make
the wrinkle or scar less visible. The beam of laser vaporizes
the upper layers of damaged skin so that new cells can
form to create a smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin
surface.
Good candidates for laser resurfacing are
both men and women who have fine lines especially around
the eyes, vertical lines around the mouth, facial scars
caused by injury, accident, or acne; areas of uneven pigmentation
(sun spots), or lines on cheeks caused by sun damage.
Laser resurfacing may be performed on the whole face or
in specific regions.
