Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. Many women with large breasts complain of upper back pain, neck pain, shoulder discomfort, and bra strap grooving due to the weight of the breasts in the bra. Breast reduction can offer physical relief as well as cosmetic improvement and at the same time dramatically improve your appearance and self-esteem. Many women who have had a breast reduction find themselves more physically and socially active.

Good candidates for breast reduction are patients with heavy breasts which cause symptoms related to the weight of the breast, patients who are in good health and not excessively overweight, non-smokers and teenagers with disproportionate breasts who as a result may be suffering from low self-esteem.

Length of Procedure

A breast reduction is typically performed under general anesthesia at an outpatient surgical facility.  The procedure is approximately 4 hours long and an overnight stay is required.

Patients can typically return to work in about 7-10 days and resume unrestricted activity, such as exercise, within 4-6 weeks.
